Following My Dreams
by Kebba K.
Hi. My name is Kebba. I would like to share my weight loss story with you. I was born and grew up in New York City. At the age of 10, my mother and my father took me back to live in Africa. We lived there for 5 years. During my time in Africa I did not attend school and came back to New York barely able to read and write. This frustrated my parents and made me sad to disappoint them so much. My frustration grew into depression and I grew with it to 315 pounds.
I moved to Philadelphia in 2002 and started working as a janitor for the Navy, cleaning offices and bathrooms. I started getting the help of a tutor in reading and math. I met so many people at the Navy Yard that got me involved with exercising at the gym during my lunch break. I went from not being able to run a block to finishing the Broad Street Run – 10 miles! I stopped drinking soda and eating McDonalds and started eating mostly broccoli and chicken. I went from 315 pounds to 215 pounds, losing 100 pounds!
By 2007, I went from being a janitor to a program assistant with the Navy. I also started pursuing my dream of becoming a model. In 2010, I was picked from hundreds of applicants to be a contestant on the reality series Reel Time Models! In the Fall, I was picked from the dozens of contestants as the 1st winner of this new reality series! What was better than winning was the Facebook message I received the day after I won from a kid saying, “Your story was an inspiration to me.” That hit me so hard I got goose bumps.
Losing weight changed my life and helped my dream of becoming a model turn into a reality. I have a fashion show in Paris this Spring and other opportunities are lining up each day.
Don’t give up on yourself. It’s worth the effort.
